November 2021 Update
Although we frequently hear the term “Eucharistic Ministers”, the actual term is Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. We are “Extraordinary” because the “Ordinary” Minister of Holy Communion is the priest. The laity are now privileged to be able to assist with the distribution of Communion. Like all privileges, there are responsibilities attached. We have the responsibility of example. We must show reverence and deference while we are assisting with distribution of Communion.
Although there is not a written dress code, please use good judgment. Shorts, flip-flops, sandals, jeans, and t-shirts are not appropriate. Gentlemen should tuck in their shirts and button their sleeves; rolled up dress shirtsleeves are not reverent.
Please arrive 10-15 minutes prior to Mass and check in with the Mass Coordinator.
The Sign of Peace is your cue to proceed to the Altar. Bow slightly toward the Altar before ascending the steps. Go to the counter next to the work sacristy door (on the tabernacle side of the sanctuary) to sanitize your hands.
Ideally, the Hosts that are blessed at the Mass will be those distributed. If necessary, the priest will ordinarily retrieve the ciborium from the tabernacle during the sign of peace. If you are called to do so instead, go to the tabernacle, genuflect, and then unlock the door. Remove the ciborium, close (but don’t lock) the door and bring the ciborium to the priest at the altar.
Stand at the step leading to the platform on which the altar rests (not on the raised altar platform) to receive Communion.
For those parishioners who wish a blessing, you may Extend your hand and say, “May the Lord bless you”. Do not make the sign of the Cross; only clergy may do so.
Speak clearly (“The Body of Christ”) and be aware of the awesome task in which you are participating.
There are always a few disabled parishioners who are unable to process up. They are served after the general procession.
